COMMUNITY-CENTRIC
Supporting Columbus County
Located between Whiteville and Hallsboro in southeast North Carolina, Lacewing Energy Center is a proposed utility-scale solar and battery energy storage project. The solar array and battery system would sit south of Andrew Jackson Highway (US 74), out of sight from nearby roads and away from nearby homes.
The Virginia-based team from TerraForm Power is the developer. Duke Energy and the southeast NC grid will receive the project’s electricity.
Lacewing will be a quiet neighbor that maintains the rural charm of Columbus County. This energy center will operate quietly and safely, generating steady tax revenue to the county without drawing on public services — all while delivering affordable, reliable power to the local power grid.

PART OF THE ENERGY SOLUTION
Affordable power.
Local resilience.
Across North Carolina, residential power bills are up 30% in the past 5 years. A large portion of each household’s monthly electricity bill can be attributed to the fuel cost for traditional power plants. Responsible solar+storage projects like Lacewing Energy Center provide an alternative that helps keep electricity rates in check.
Utility-scale solar is one the cheapest forms of electricity generation America can build today, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Meanwhile, experts at NC State note that battery energy storage is one of the most cost-effective ways to prevent blackouts, lower wholesale electricity prices during peak hours, and strengthen the reliability of southeast North Carolina’s grid in the face of hurricanes and other extreme weather.
